WPA Inventories of the Daugherty Cave

In 1937 the Virginia WPA Historical Inventory Project visited the Daugherty Cave north of Lebanon, Virginia and made this report. The Daugherty Cemetery is near the cave and is the burial place of Andy Daugherty the Civil War veteran and my great-great grandfather. This says that Civil War deserters hid in the cave. I had not heard that story but relatives say that the family hid supplies and livestock there to protect it from raiding soldiers. There were no battles in the immediate area, I believe the nearest were at Abingdon and Saltville.
